Drone-based aerial photography and videography in the greater Nashville area


UAVs have changed how we manage personnel and resources. Tasks which were previously costly in time, manpower, and risk are now quickly and accurately accomplished via drone. It is now possible to inspect tower-based equipment, produce aerial surveys, and give potential real estate clients a much fuller picture of a property.

We are based in the Nashville area and proudly serve all of Middle Tennessee.

We offer the highest quality aerial photography, videography, and imaging, but are intentionally committed to affordable pricing. Our base project fee, which includes photography and videography, is $350; stills only is just $175. Please contact us for a quote on your next aerial imaging project.

What is 4k resolution?

 

4096 pixels x 2160 pixels (True 4k), or more commonly, 3840x2160 (Ultra High Definition or UHD). Although we have the capability to shoot in either, we recommend 3840x2160 because most devices on which video will be seen are the same aspect ratio as UHD; videos in true 4k will have black bars appear on the edges of the vast majority of screens.

 

Most videos on YouTube are viewed in 1080p resolution, which is 1920x1080 pixels. Four 1080p images fit into the space of one 4k image, thus 4k offers four times greater resolution than 1080p. The image is incredibly crisp and sharp. In fact, most TVs and computer monitors are not yet capable of displaying 4k.

Why do we recommend 4k?

 

Shooting in 4k offers many advantages.

 

First, our footage is future-proofed; when the time comes that most people own 4k-capable TVs and computer monitors, our "old" footage can be viewed afresh in the extraordinary clarity of 4k - no need to re-shoot.

 

Second, we have the option of "zooming in" during post-production. Quite often we would like to crop, or tighten, a certain shot during the post-production editing, and shooting in such high resolution allows us to zoom up to 4x and still maintain an acceptable resolution (1080p).

 

Third, every frame of 4k footage is essentially a 12-megapixel still photo; if desired, we can pull high-quality still shots from our video footage.

 

Even though most internet video is presented in 1080p since it offers an excellent balance between visual quality and loading time, we prefer to shoot in 4k and then export the finished product into any resolution you like; 1080p, 2.7k, or 4k.

When would I want something other than 4k?

 

The only situation in which we recommend shooting in a different format than 4k is when filming a sports or action event; we have the capability of shooting 1080p at 60 frames per second, or FPS, which is twice what is available in other resolutions. 1080p still offers a high-quality image, and 60 FPS produces a smoothness and visual accuracy not possible with the usual 30 FPS.

 

As smooth and beautiful as 1080p/60fps footage is, it is best reserved for action and sports since it does give a sports-like look to the footage. 4k/30fps does give a beautiful, cinematic, professional look that we are accustomed to from movies and television.

What is an aerial survey?

 

An aerial survey is an imaging technique that produces an extremely high-resolution overhead view of an area. The mapping area is programmed into the drone along with specific details of the flight, and the on-board computer with the aid of US and Russian GPS satellites flies the entire mission automatically. The end result is hundreds (or thousands, depending on the size of the mapping area) of high-resolution photos taken at precise intervals and positions which can than be "stitched" together by software, creating what appears to be a Google Maps-like image, but which can be zoomed in very far; depending on conditions, our aerial surveys are usually capable of achieving 1" per pixel resolution.

 

Large areas can be surveyed using this technique; if the project requires battery changes, the drone will automatically return for the replacement and resume where it left off until the survey is complete.

Is 3D modelling possible?

 

Yes! We have two different techniques which can create a 3D model. This information can even be used to produce a 3D-printed miniature of the structure, monument, or other subject. Keep in mind that to achieve quality results, there needs to be enough space surrounding the subject for the drone to make several passes; if there are trees or other obstacles blocking the immediate view, a model will be difficult if not impossible to create.

What is a panorama?

 

A panorama is a 360-degree photograph created by "stitching" together several photos taken from the same position but at different angles. Thanks to GPS positioning, a drone can remain stationary for long periods of time, making it an ideal platform for panoramic photography. We recommend a three-tiered panorama which yields a stunning, user-controlled overhead view of the subject.

What is post-production?

 

Post-production is the editing process of both photos and videos and is essential to a beautiful, professional finished product. As amazing as modern cameras are, they cannot begin to compare to the capability of the human eye; thus, for both video and still photography, we post-process in order to more accurately recreate the view and realism of being there in person. We are able to do this by adjusting the shot composition, the color temperature, and even which parts of the spectrum of light we choose to highlight. We also compensate for any normal mechanical byproducts of the camera itself.

 

Every professional photo you see has been substantially post-processed in order to refine and clarify the original view. Post-processing does take far more time than shooting but yields beautiful, meaningful results. Post-processing is included in all of our projects and is accomplished through a comprehensive suite of software. While there is a great deal of technical knowledge necessary to achieve quality post-production, it is absolutely an artistic exercise. The tools we use are very powerful and can quickly "overdo" an image, robbing it of its honesty and natural appearance; post-production requires a very delicate balance of enhancement and fidelity to arrive at the perfect result.
